Learning Outcomes

The overall objective is that students will be able to assess and evaluate health conditions as the basis for the nurse‘s treatment of the patient from both a nursing and medical perspective. The student should also be able to master various technical and communication skills and basic pharmaceutical calculations in a simulated environment.

After completing the course students should be able to:
• describe the development and occurrence of symptoms and signs of illness for common illhealth states, describe diagnosis and treatment in both nursing and medicine in relation to nurse‘s responsibility, •reflect on how health and diseases are related to people‘s living conditions and habits,
• describe common classes of pharmaceuticals for various health conditions on use and adverse effects,
• describe and discuss nursing methods in the nurse‘s responsibilities related to the theoretical knowledge base,
• describe theories of pedagogy, didactics and communication with relevance for nursing and the nurse‘s education and supervising function,
• describe and reflect on the requirements and conditions for eHealth in support of healthcare systematically assess, prioritize and critically evaluate the health status of patients based on symptoms, signs and disease progression in relation to the nurse‘s responsibility;
• systematic use of the nursing process by assessing and valuing health status, and formulate the expected outcomes and the independent and dependent care measures in a nursing care plan,
• communicate with patients in a simulated health situation in a respectful, sensitive and empathic manner,
• reflect on patient integrity, power and participation in the assessment and treatment in health care;
• inform and teach patient care in a simulated situation with regard to the specific context ,
• prepare and implement nursing and medical measures in a simulated environment based on a person-centered and ethical perspective in accordance with technical and health regulations as well as administrative provisions to ensure patient safety,
• reflect on how norms, values, gender, ethnicity , socioeconomic status and age affect communication, care relationship and interpretation of symptoms and signs,
• reflect on the nurse‘s role and responsibilities in relation to environmental work for a sustainable society.

Course Content

The course highlights the development and occurrence of signs and symptoms of illness and diagnosis and treatment in both nursing and medicine. It also adresses communication, and education as the basis for the nurse‘s teaching and nurturing function. The course also emphasize eHealth and person-centered care in which communication, interpersonal encounters, ethics, diversity issues, patient‘s rights, privacy, power and self-determination is of great importance. The course includes proficiency training in the ability to communicate and teach, conduct various technical procedures in care, pharmaceuticals and basic pharmaceutical calculations.

Assessment

Examination is conducted by individual written examinations, seminars, written assignments, and practical examinations of clinical skills.

Forms of Study

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, project work and proficiency training in a simulated environment.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–G.

Grades are reported in eight parts.

Prerequisites

  • Introduction to nursing science and ethics 15 credits, Anatomy and Physiology I 7.5 credits and Methods for evidence-based nursing I 7.5 credits

The course is conducted to a high extent with the support of information and communication technology which requires an active Internet Connection where students can communicate with audio and video via a computer or equivalent Equipment.
