Learning Outcomes

After completing the course the student will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Describe how tourism is related to other economic and social activities on a global level. (1)
  • Demonstrate a general understanding of the importance of tourism in different parts of the world. (2)
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the issues related to sustainable development in terms of the environmental, social and economic effects of tourism. (3)

Expertise and skill

  • Describe and present tourism at different geographical levels.(4)
  • Analyse information based on the course’s theoretical framework. (5)
  • Analyse tourism flows with the help of statistical data presented in Excel and present the results orally and in writing.(6)

Judgement and approach

  • Discuss how the processes of tourism destination development and its sustainability are dependent on the global economic development and political systems in different countries. (7)
  • Evaluate the ethical aspects of the relationship between host and guest in different parts of the world and relate them to the results of the destination development in these particular places. (8)


Course Content

This course will address the role of tourism in society. Development of tourism in different parts of the world is analysed in the context of global economic development and how it varies on different geographical levels from global to local. The role of the state in the process of overall socio-economic development is discussed in relation to developed/developing countries. Development of tourism in peripheral areas of the world are related to the development of work related migration and transnational relations among migrants. The use of natural resource and their economic value for the tourism development is also discussed. Religious, ethical and gender issues in connection to the relations between host and guests are given a special focus during this course. Different ways to describe tourism in terms of development and tourism flows using statistical data will be discussed.

Assessment

Learning outcomes 1-3 and 7-8 will be examined by a written test (5 hp).
Learning outcomes 4-6 will be examined by a written assignment and a seminar (1,5 hp), learning outcome 5 and 7 is assessed by the written assignment connected to the study visit (1 hp).
