Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course the student should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Describe tourism as a social phenomenon and its extent.
  • Describe the basics of tourism regarding transportation, accommodation, food, activities and shopping.
  • Describe how tourism is planned and organized.
  • Describe the actors directly and indirectly affected by tourism.
  • Describe the basics of Swedish destination development.

Competence and skills

  • Describe and compare different types of destinations, and the link between tourism and regional development.
  • Explain the theories of destination development and link these to practical examples.

Judgement and approach

  • Show the ability to take a reflective and independent attitude by using their own words to describe and summarize the key issues and arguments within the course theme.

Course Content

The course introduces the foundations of tourism and describes the development of the tourism industry and its importance for economic, cultural and social processes locally, regionally and nationally. The course also provides a basic understanding of the concepts; sustainable development and sustainable tourism development.

Assessment

Written assignment 2 hp (U-G), oral presentation 1,5 hp (U-G) and written exam 4 hp (A-F)

Forms of Study

Lectures and compulsory seminars.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.
