Summary in English

The course consists of two parts.

Literacy Development and Instruction
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of theories on the reading development of pupils in terms of first- and second-language perspectives, with particular focus on pre-school class and primary school years 1-3
  • account for and reflect on the content, traditions and institutional terms of reading instruction, focusing on governing papers and syllabuses in the subject of Swedish regarding pre-school and primary school years 1-3
  • give examples of, explain and evaluate how teaching creates opportunities for pupils’ reading development
  • demonstrate the ability to use linguistic, digital and aesthetic expressions in order to create good conditions in which to stimulate pupils’ written language development in a varied way
  • assess pupils’ reading skills and show understanding of how assessment of reading skills can be conducted at school and how this assessment relates to other teaching
  • describe aspects of reading and writing difficulties as well as reflect on and plan individualised literacy teaching so that pupils with different linguistic backgrounds and different needs are included
  • compile and discuss the course content of this course module based on a scientific approach
  • demonstrate the ability to independently speak and write in different genres of well-functioning Swedish in this course module

Writing Development and Instruction
After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of theories of writing and writing development in terms of first- and second-language perspectives, with particular focus on pre-school class and the primary school years 1-3
  • account for and reflect on the content, traditions and institutional conditions of the teaching of writing, focusing on governing documents and syllabuses in the subject of Swedish regarding preschool class and the primary school years 1-3
  • show understanding of children‘s writing inside and outside of school as well as how the interaction of these may be important for teaching
  • analyse and evaluate written texts in different genres that are read and produced in pre-school class and the primary school years 1-3
  • demonstrate knowledge of how teaching writing and reading of texts in different genres can strengthen pupils’ written language development
  • demonstrate an understanding of how different media forms can be used for students‘ written language development and for the development of new forms of written language teaching
  • analyse and assess pupils’ writing skills based on authentic texts and show understanding of how assessment of written texts can be conducted in school and how this assessment relates to other teaching
  • reflect on and plan individualised writing lessons so that pupils with different linguistic backgrounds and different needs are included
  • compile and discuss the content of this course module based on a scientific approach
  • demonstrate an in-depth ability to independently speak and write in different genres in good Swedish in this course module.
