Prerequisites

  • A Bachelor´s degree comprising at least 180 credits, with a major in Caring science or Nursing as well as Additionally Profession, theory and method, 7.5 credits, Sexual and reproductive health, 9 credits and Pregnancy, Childbirth and Postpartum Care, 13.5 credits

Summary in English

The overall objective of the course is that the student should be able to apply, extend and integrate their theoretical and clinical knowledge of sexual, reproductive and perinatal health based on the midwifery profession and research area focusing on gynecological care and postpartum care.

After completing the course, the student shall, on an extended level, be able to:

  • critically reflect on concepts, theories and perspectives to promote good health care in gynecological and postpartum care, with focus on women and the family perspective,
  • independently care for women and healthy babies postpartum and identify deviations from normal progression,
  • promote the mother-child connection and provide support, a sense of security and advice on breastfeeding,
  • assess and evaluate breastfeeding complications and the need for alternative feeding methods,
  • conduct examinations of and treatment for premature infants with special needs,
  • under supervision provide care for the newborn in the neonatal unit and those closely related to the newborn,
  • use medical technology that is part of the area of responsibility of the midwife in a safe manner,
  • identify health problems and illnesses in gynecological health care and conduct treatment in outpatient and inpatient gynecological care,
  • actively initiate and create good quality care with high hygienic standards,
  • participate in abortion activities and demonstrate independence in the care of women having an abortion in inpatient care as well as outpatient gynecological care,
  • ensure adequate documentation, patient record management and reporting according to current regulations,
  • apply a professional approach in communication with patients and colleagues, and show empathy in the assessment and application of knowledge in light of the current circumstances for the patient and those closely related to the patient,
  • discuss and reflect on personal professional development as a midwife.
