Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe central theories concerning , social preconditions, developments, outcomes and moral-philosophical implications of social and welfare policies
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge about Sweden‘s welfare politics from an international perspective
  • Identify and analyse similarities and differences between various countries concerning welfare policies
  • Reflect over welfare policies‘ moral-philosophical implications.

Course Content

The course discusses central theories concerning the developments and effects of social and welfare policies, which highlight the relevance of class formations, gender differences and religious and political ideologies. A focus lies on Swedish welfare politics, which is often regarded as different from that in other countries. Furthermore, the course discusses moral-philosophical implications concerning statutory welfare policy.

Assessment

Mandatory seminars and one written examination.
