Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Account for the areas of competences of international organisations, their structure and how they function
  • Account for the principles of international law, relevant to the interplay between states and international organisations
  • On the basis of International Relations (IR) theories, understand the tensions that exist between states‘ national interests and the common interests of international organisations as well as tensions between different international organisations
  • Have gained an insight into the theoretical and practical problems that arise as a consequence of the interplay between international organisations and the competing principles that constitute a part of international law
  • Assess and critically discuss the role of international organisations in the field of international relations by searching, identifying, collecting and interpreting relevant sources of information

Course Content

The course deals with different international organisations including global and regional International Organisations, their institutional structure, working mechanisms and functions and their relation to the principles of international law, their relation to states and to each other. The course develops an enhanced understanding of International Relations theories by applying the theoretical debates about cooperation between states to the case of International Organisations and a set of global challenges.

Assessment

Written take-home examination, written and oral presentations and the active participation of the student during the seminars.

Prerequisites

  • International Relations: an Introduction, Undergraduate 1, 7.5 Credits or equivalent.
