Learning Outcomes

After a successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate good knowledge of the history of Islam in Africa
  • demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of different Islamic strands, the relationship between them and their relation to surrounding societies
  • demonstrate comprehensive understanding of relevant theories on the roles of Islam in history and society in Africa
  • with a competent application of relevant theories independently compare and evaluate different processes, mechanisms and strategies within various strands of Islam in Africa
  • communicate relevant theories and knowledge within the field.

Course Content

The course includes the study of the historical development of Islam in Africa. Contemporary relationships between different strands of Islam in Africa and their influences on various African societies are also studied. An important issue is the relationship between global and local perspectives in the study of Islam in Africa.

Assessment

The course is examined through oral and written accounts in connection with seminars, through a paper on the history of Islam in Africa, and through an independently written and critically analyzing study based on literature chosen in consultation with the teacher.

Forms of Study

Teaching is given through lectures and seminars. The course is given in English.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor Degree or a Teachers Exam within the area of Religious Studies. Students are exempt from the request of knowledge of Swedish at Swedish upper secondary school.
