Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • communicate in Portuguese in familiar contexts
  • participate in a discussion in Portuguese on familiar topics
  • recognise and discuss grammatical structures and use them orally and in writing
  • discuss and write simple and coherent texts on familiar topics
  • translate brief and simple texts to and from Portuguese
  • describe, analyse and contrast different aspects of current Portuguese-speaking societies around the world.

Course Content

The course is a continuation of Basic Course I and focuses on basic language proficiency corresponding to level A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. By engaging in a variety of different exercises in listening comprehension and speaking as well as by reading and writing simple texts, students develop their ability to interact orally and in writing in Portuguese on different topics. Basic grammar studies are is also included in order for students to develop the ability to understand the form and syntax of the language, as well as to carry out contrastive analysis with other languages. The course also includes an introduction to Portuguese-speaking cultures and societies around the world. A selection of texts, which shed light on some aspects of the relationship between Portugal, Brazil and other parts of the Lusophone world in Africa and Asia, is analysed and discussed.

Assessment

Grades are based on continual assessment of active participation in seminars, oral and written assignments as well as a final written exam.

Forms of Study

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars and group activities. English and/or Swedish are used as support languages but as soon as possible Portuguese will be used as the language of tuition.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.


To get the grade of VG on the whole course, VG is required on at least 12 cr.

Module 2: Written proficiency - 6 hp
Module 3: Portuguese-speaking cultures and society - 3 hp
