Learning Outcomes

The main goal of the course is to provide students with analytical tools and theories of economics relating to aspects within the tourism sector. After completing the course, the student will be able to:
  • Give an overview of size and structure of the global tourism industry (1)
  • Discuss trends in and analyze problems of supply and demand for tourism services (2)
  • Empirically analyze tourism demand (3)
  • Measure the economic impact of tourism and events using various quantitative methods (4)
  • Discuss issues of tourism taxation (5)
  • Discuss the impacts of tourism on the environment (6)
  • Read critically and understand scientific articles related to quantitative methods within the tourism sector (7)
  • Apply empirical methods on a tourism industry problem and report and present the results in a structured and linguistically correct manner. (8)

Course Content

This course examines tourism from an economic perspective. Topics in the course include tourism demand; structure of competition among suppliers of tourism services; benefits and costs of tourism development to the host community of special events; the role of government in the taxation, regulation and protection of the tourism industry and tourism’s impact on the environment. The course discusses empirical and theoretical concepts as well as empirical evidence on different aspects of tourism.

Assessment

The learning outcomes are assessed by a written exam, equivalent to 6 credits, and a project report, equivalent to 1.5 credits. The written exam examines learning objectives 1 to 6, while the project report examines primarily learning objectives 7 and 8. The project report should follow the instructions for written reports which are available on the course website on Fronter.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor’s degree comprising at least 180 credits, Main Field of Study: Economics and Data and Statistics, first cycle level 1, 7,5 credits or equivalent knowledge Documented language proficiency knowledge equivalent to English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.
