Course Content

The course focuses on the didactic application of children’s and young adult literature in German with emphasis on contemporary fictional texts suitable for teaching in primary and secondary schools. Based on the curriculums, literature in different genres and the way the texts can be applied didactically are discussed. The course assumes a broad concept of literature that may also include for example graphic novels, cartoons, films and audio books. The works are analysed and contextualised based on various didactic issues and on how this can be communicated to young readers. The literary texts are selected based on topics that are timely for young people today and that show aspects of society in German-speaking countries. In addition to fiction, literary didactic texts are also discussed.
