Learning Outcomes
The course gives an introduction to German children‘s and youth literature with focus on contemporary texts. Literature in different genres is discussed and analysed from a diversity perspective, partly based on general literature terminology, partly with special focus on the children’s literature terminology. Upon completion of the course students shall be able to:
- explain children‘s and youth literature in German-speaking countries and its history
- apply literary concepts and use literary analytical techniques
- reflect on the educational message in the texts
- reflect on how children‘s and youth literature can be applied using different digital media in language teaching at different levels and in different age groups
- critically evaluate their own learning.
Course Content
In the course a number of texts from contemporary German child and
youth fiction are studied. A broad definition of literature is used, including graphical
novels, comics, movies and audio books. The works are analysed and contextualised based on different themes, and problematised based on current topics like gender perspective,
sustainability, dystopia, everyday reality, flight and migration, racism, and there is discussion as to how these are communicated to young readers. Furthermore, we
study how children‘s and youth literature is expressed in different new media.
Assessment
Active participation in seminars and written assignments.
Forms of Study
Obligatory seminars and written assignments. The language of instruction is German.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
Prerequisites
- German: Modern German Literature, 7.5 credits on First cycle. No knowledge of Swedish is required
