Learning Outcomes

The overall objective of the course is that students develop knowledge and skills so that they can communicate in Swedish in predictable and spontaneous situations that occur in life, in society and at work.

Modules

1.
Swedish Language Proficiency I (CEFR A1), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • apply basic Swedish morphology and syntax
  • use basic Swedish vocabulary
  • apply the basic principles of Swedish pronunciation
  • express themselves orally in Swedish in simple everyday situations
  • write a simple text in Swedish.

2.
Swedish Language Proficiency II (CEFR A2), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • apply basic knowledge of Swedish grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, morphology and syntax
  • apply basic knowledge of communication in Swedish society and professional life
  • write different types of simple texts in Swedish
  • give a simple oral presentation
  • hold simple conversations in everyday situations in Swedish.

3.
Swedish Language Proficiency III (CEFR B1), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • apply in-depth knowledge of the structure of Swedish
  • master an expanded vocabulary relating to Swedish society
  • listen to and read Swedish, and speak and write in Swedish
  • orally convey opinions, and use Swedish in conversation and oral presentations to talk about their own experiences.

4.
Communication: Swedish Professional Life I (CEFR B1), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • use language skills and cultural competence that are required in the context of professional life in Sweden
  • read and understand texts and discuss different themes relating to professional life
  • communicate in Swedish, understand spoken Swedish and write simple texts in Swedish that relate to professional life.

5.
Swedish Language Proficiency IV (CEFR B2), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • understand texts and conversations that relate to Swedish society
  • present and discuss various societal themes in both oral and written Swedish.

6.
Communication: Swedish Professional Life II (CEFR B2), 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • apply in-depth language skills and cultural competence that are important in professional life
  • talk about texts and audiovisual material and produce texts that are relevant to Swedish professional life.

7.
Swedish Culture and Society, 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • discuss and reflect on multimodal texts and audiovisual material about Swedish society and cultural life as well as human rights and fundamental democratic values
  • reflect on the individual‘s rights and obligations from both a Swedish and a comparative perspective
  • problematise the concept of culture and discuss similarities and differences between different cultures.

8.
Swedish Professional Life, 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • use Swedish in work-related contexts
  • discuss and analyse work-related multimodal texts and audiovisual material
  • search for and select facts relevant to Swedish professional life
  • write both informal and formal texts important both in the search for employment and for other kinds of writing central to professional life.

9.
Swedish for Health Care Settings, 7.5 Credits

On completion of the module, students will be able to:

  • use work-oriented Swedish with a focus on work in health care and social care
  • apply vocabulary that is specific to health care and social care
  • talk about multimodal texts and audiovisual material relating to Swedish health care, nursing and social care
  • write different types of texts relevant to work within health care, nursing and social care.

Course Content

The course consists of nine modules. The main focus of each module is communication skills.

Modules

1.
Swedish Language Proficiency I (CEFR A1), 7.5 Credits

This module provides an overview of the basics of Swedish vocabulary, and elementary morphology and syntax. In addition, the characteristic features of Swedish prosody are addressed, and students practise their pronunciation during the course. There are opportunities for students to increase their perceptive and productive ability by, for example, taking part in simple conversations and writing simple texts in Swedish. The module focuses primarily on communication in everyday life.

2.
Swedish Language Proficiency II (CEFR A2), 7.5 Credits

This module deals with the basic structure, vocabulary, pronunciation, morphology and syntax of Swedish. In productive and perceptive assignments as well as in interactive classroom activities, students work on their Swedish grammar and communication skills. The module introduces communication in society and professional life using exercises. Students practise how to write different types of simple texts in Swedish. Students also take part in oral presentations and conversation exercises in groups.

3.
Swedish Language Proficiency III (CEFR B1), 7.5 Credits

This module provides both in-depth knowledge about the structure of Swedish and an increase in vocabulary, with a focus on themes concerning Swedish society, laws and rules, geography, history, traditions and politics. Students extend their Swedish communication skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing in productive and perceptive exercises. They pracitse how to express opinions and talk about their experiences in Swedish in individual presentations and group discussions.

4.
Communication: Swedish Professional Life I (CEFR B1), 7.5 Credits

The focus of this module is on developing the language skills and cultural competence needed in professional life in Sweden. Different themes connected to professional life form the basis for learning in this module. Students practise their oral and written communication skills and listening comprehension skills and will also read amd discuss texts related to professional life.

5.
Swedish Language Proficiency IV (CEFR B2), 7.5 Credits

This module focuses on the development of in-depth knowledge in Swedish. By reading, listening, writing and talking about different societal themes, students increase their ability to understand and actively use Swedish.

6.
Communication: Swedish Professional Life II (CEFR B2), 7.5 Credits

This module focuses on extending language skills and cultural competence that are important for professional life. Texts and audiovisual material relevant to Swedish professional life form the basis for productive and perceptive exercises in this module.

7.
Swedish Culture and Society, 7.5 Credits

This module covers basic knowledge of Swedish culture and society. Multimodal texts and audiovisual material about Swedish society and cultural life as well as human rights and fundamental democratic values are discussed. Further the rights and obligations of the individual are studied from both a Swedish and a comparative perspective. The concept of culture, and similarities and differences between different cultures are discussed and problematised.

8.
Swedish Professional Life, 7.5 Credits

This module provides an introduction to Swedish professional life with a focus on the use of Swedish in work-related contexts. Discussion and analysis of work-related multimodal texts and audiovisual material are interspersed with exercises in vocabulary, reading comprehension, fact-finding, writing and spoken Swedish. Special focus is placed on writing both informal and formal texts that are important both in the search for employment and for other work-related contexts, such as the cover letter, CV, meeting invitation, meeting notes and messages.

9.
Swedish for Health Care Settings, 7.5 Credits

This module provides a linguistic foundation for work and studies in health care and social care. The focus is on language and language use as well as vocabulary specific to health care and social care settings. Students complete communicative exercises and writing assignments, and practise their reading comprehension, vocabulary and grammar using multimodal texts and audiovisual material with a focus on health care, nursing and social care.

Assessment

Modules 1-3 and module 5 are examined continuously through active participation in seminars and written assignments. These modules end with an oral and a written examination.
Module 4 and modules 6-9 are examined continuously through active participation in seminars, written assignments and oral presentations.

Forms of Study

Each module comprises obligatory seminars in which students must actively participate. The language of instruction is Swedish, and English is used when necessary.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To receive the grade of VG for the entire course, students must achieve a VG in four modules.

Prerequisites

  • General entry requirements. No knowledge of Swedish is required
