Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  • Explain in-depth planning theory and discursive perspectives for current urban and regional issues
  • Plan and carry out a planning project linked to current challenges in community construction.
  • Explain roles and relationships between different actors in a planning project.
  • Exercise self-reflective problem solving, impact assessments and evaluations in different planning situations.

Course Content

The course provides an in depth understanding of the theories of planning for some selected fields of knowledge, as well as techniques for and practical application of this through problem formulation, analysis, development of alternative approaches, and critical reflection on these in a larger project based planning assignment. This assignment forms a practical component in the course where a current urban or regional problem is studied and suggestions for improvements are presented. The practical part is a lot about developing and practising techniques for managing complex planning problems. Linked to this, techniques for self reflexive problem-solving are studied and practised, along with impact assessments and evaluation. Previously acquired knowledge about form and design and GIS may be applied depending on the nature of the planning project. The course also involves training in academic writing.

The final grade in the course is set based on the examiner’s collective assessment.

Prerequisites

  • 90 credits in the Construction and Urban Planning Programme, of which the courses Architecture 5 credits, Spatial Planning 5 credits, Urban and Regional Planning 7.5 credtis, Sustainable development 5 credits, Form and Urban Design 7.5 credits, Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 7.5 credits shall be included
