Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to
  • demonstrate a basic knowledge about the Swedish civil society, including its historical growth, scope and role in and for Swedish democracy.
  • understand and problematize questions about civil society on the basis of relevant concepts and theories.
  • demonstrate an understanding of the role of civil society and its relation to the public sector.

Course Content

The course provide a basic knowledge of the Swedish civil society including its historical growth, scope and role, and related to democratic theory. Civil society is analyzed on the basis of various central concepts and theories, and in view of its role for the individual, democratic governance and the welfare society. Particular emphasis is placed on theories and perspectives, which relate to the relationship between civil society and the public sector. In addition, the course addresses contemporary challenges and trends in the Swedish civil society.
