Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding

Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • explain the importance of normalization for a design solution of a relational database
  • explain the importance of clear identifiers for tables in relational databases

Skills and Abilities
Upon completion of the course, the students will be able to:

  • apply basic principles of relational databases in accordance with the relational model
  • use conceptual modelling and graphical description techniques to design relational databases that conform to at least third normal form
  • manipulate data and database objects
  • use normalization to analyze, verify, and modify a data model  

Course Content

The course covers the principles and methods for designing and using relational databases. The course introduces the database concept, systems theory, and basic design principles for relational databases. The course includes methods for developing database systems. The course also deals with how and why databases are used in companies, by authorities and in organisations.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–G.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Lab report - 4 Credits | U–G
  • Home examination - 3.5 Credits | U–G

Prerequisites

  • Software Development Technology, 7.5 credits or equivalent foundational programming course 7.5 credits

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
