Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • discuss the main features of the development of the French language from a historical and cultural perspective
  • discuss the features and characteristics of current French
  • distinguish and describe different features in the development of the French language based on texts from different eras
  • demonstrate a good linguistic competence in French both in writing and orally
  • reflect on different genres and trends in medieval and Renaissance literature based on language historical aspects
  • read and discuss a selection of texts from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century.

Course Content

The course includes a historical study of language in texts from the Middle Ages to current French. These texts are treated from a phonetic, syntactic and historical perspective. The main features of the development of the language from Latin to modern French are studied as are the expanse and position of the French language in the French-speaking world.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • History of the French Language - 7.5 Credits | U–VG

Entry Requirements

  • 60 credits in the main field of study French, including 30 credits in French II

This course overlaps previous course codes GFR2KQ, GFR2AU and GFR26U.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
