Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students shall be able to:
  • read and analyse a selection of contemporary literary texts from the Maghreb region
  • discuss some aspects of culture and politics in the Maghreb region and how these are reflected in literature
  • discuss defining moments and aspects in the modern history of the Maghreb region
  • explain, from a historical perspective, the importance of language in literary and cultural contexts in the Maghreb region
  • describe a number of the region’s central authorships.

Course Content

The course comprises the study of a number of literary texts from the Maghreb region written in the 20th and 21st centuries. The texts are dealt with from literary, linguistic and cultural perspectives. The course further includes a historical approach, where defining moments in the region are looked at. The course also discusses the role of the different languages spoken in the region in relation to literature and other cultural forms.

Assessment

Continuous examination through active participation in seminars, written assignments and an oral presentation.

Forms of Study

Obligatory seminars in which students are expected to participate actively. Swedish and/or English are used as the language of tuition.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.
