Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain and discuss some of the issues which can affect oral and written communication in intercultural business environments
  • use an intercultural communication model to analyse and critically evaluate their intercultural oral and written communication, and develop strategies for the future to better handle intercultural encounters
  • create presentations considering intercultural aspects
  • analyse a communication situation and adapt their communication style and form as required by the situation.
  • analyse a company’s publicly available communication for its suitability to an intercultural audience/reader and make recommendations in the form of a clear, concise and persuasive business report that take into consideration intercultural aspects.

Course Content

This course focuses on the practical and personal development of students’ intercultural communication.

The first module, Intercultural Competence, focuses on the development of students’ intercultural communication knowledge and skills which can be applied in the future when they are communicating orally and in writing within an intercultural business environment. Several intercultural aspects will be considered, such as face to face and online communication forms, reader and audience analysis, the structure of communication, language, formality and clarity. In the second module, Intercultural Communication Analysis, analyses of self-awareness and communication are discussed. In the third module, Project and Written Business Report, students complete a case study project with a persuasive business report.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

To pass the course with distinction (VG), students must attain VG in Module 1, and at least one further VG grade in either Module 2 or 3.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Module 1: Intercultural Competence - 2 Credits | U–VG
  • Module 2: Intercultural Communication Analysis - 2.5 Credits | U–VG
  • Module 3: Project with written Business Report - 3 Credits | U–VG

Prerequisites

  • General entry requirements. No knowledge of Swedish is required

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.
