Learning Outcomes

After completion of the course, the student shall be able to:

  •  Explain basic principles of control engineering.
  •  Describe the structure and application of control systems for electrical systems.
  •  Identify key concepts and components of control systems and use them to describe control systems using process diagrams.
  • Explain and characterize control-engineering processes with respect to static and dynamic properties.
  • Explain the principles and characteristics of different types of controllers.
  •  Apply various methods for controller tuning.
  •  Independently analyze and solve practical problems in the control of electrical systems using mathematical methods.

Course Content

The course deals with basic control and control systems. The course contains basic digital technology, components and parts of a programmable control system. Different methods are used to program control systems and the course deals with block diagrams, process models, and controllers, such as PID controllers. Furthermore, the settings of control parameters and practical problems in the regulation of electrical systems are treated. The course also includes a laboratory part in groups, which deals with the practical use of PID-control.

Assessment

  • Written examination
  • Lab report

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U, 3, 4, 5.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Written Examination - 5 Credits | U, 3, 4, 5
  • Laboratory report - 2.5 Credits | U–G

Entry Requirements

  • Single Variable Calculus 7.5 credits and Electrical Power Engineering 7.5 credits
