Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain the similarities and differences between the narrative conventions of literature, screenplays, and cinema
  • explain and discuss the application of basic adaptation theory
  • analyse film adaptations in relation to the genres, themes, styles, narrative structure, and reception of the originals
  • reflect on how the content of a screenplay and a film is affected during an adaptation process
  • explain basic copyright laws and ethical principles relating to adaptations
  • plan and write an adaptation in the form of a short film screenplay
  • reflect on and justify the choices during the process of writing an adaptation.

Course Content

The course introduces, discusses and applies adaptation theory and work processes for writing screenplays based on other sources. The course consists of two modules. In the first, adaptation theory and adaptation processes are studied, with a focus on the analysis of adaptations from literature to screenplay and film. The second module includes application and reflection in connection to a creative adaptation project, from original to screenplay. Not least, the course emphasizes the importance of the strategic choices that an adaptation process involves, that are determined by the type of adaptation that is being sought. In addition, the course covers what consideration should be given to copyright, source materials, other authors, audience, culture, and potential future production.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–G.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Adaptation Theory and Processes - 7.5 Credits | U–G
  • Creative Writing - 7.5 Credits | U–G

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement.
