Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student shall be able to:

  • explain basic concepts and ideas in corpus linguistics and in discourse analysis
  • from the perspective of discourse analysis, argue for his/her selection of corpus material with a particular issue in mind
  • use appropriate methods when working with the selected corpus
  • present this work orally and in writing using a critical approach
  • analyze and discuss the work of others in the form of constructive feedback.

Course Content

The course is an introduction to empirical approaches in French linguistics, especially those developed in corpus linguistics and for socio-cultural approaches in discourse analysis. Basic discourse analytical concepts such as speech acts, genre and text features are discussed and problematized in relation to authentic text material. During the course, the student explores language data using computer-based tools. The students are offered practical experience of using corpora and software for the analysis of linguistic data and to solve their own issues related to discourse analysis.

Assessment

The course is examined through continuous oral and written examination and assessment of seminar participation.

Forms of Study

Teaching is in the form of both lectures and seminars in which students are expected to participate actively. All teaching is in French.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade VG for the whole course, VG is required in both modules.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Basic concepts and ideas - 4.5 cr
Module 2: Own research - 3 cr

Prerequisites

  • 60 credits in French, including the course French Written Proficiency II, 7.5 credits First cycle level 1 and one of the courses French Linguistics and the History of the French Language, 7.5 credits or French: Introduction to linguistics, 7.5 credits on First cycle level 1, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required
