Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall, in French, be able to:

  • describe the main features of French language development from a historical and cultural perspective
  • describe and discuss various events in and aspects of the history of France
  • describe orally and in writing the conditions for culture, employment, social issues and politics in France.

Course Content

The course both deepens and broadens students‘ knowledge in relation to the course French Culture and Society I, and the concept of “culture“ is also discussed. During the course there is oral and written analysis of articles and texts dealing with the history of France, French society and the French-speaking world. Students also reflect critically on these texts. The course also includes the study of French language development from a historical and cultural perspective.

Assessment

The course is assessed continuously through active participation in seminars, spoken French and written submissions, including one independent short text as well as through a written examination.

Forms of Study

Teaching consists of lectures and seminars, where students are expected to participate actively. Instruction is in French.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To achieve the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required in two modules.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1: Oral assignments - 2.5 cr
Module 2: Written assignments - 2.5 cr
Module 3: French language history - 2.5 cr

Prerequisites

  • 30 credits in French, including the courses French: Culture and Cociety I, 7.5 credits and French Written Proficiency I, 7.5 credits at First cycle level 1, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required
