Learning Outcomes

The course aims to develop the ability to communicate in writing in French. On completion of the course the student should be able to:

  • Describe and apply the most common grammatical terms in various forms of linguistic analysis
  • Apply basic French grammar in their own text production such as writing writing simple texts or summarizing a newspaper article in good French
  • Use a basic vocabulary in French
  • Demonstrate basic awareness of and apply knowledge of the structure of the French language
  • Demonstrate independence in their studies and reflect on their own learning.

If the course is read with a contrastive focus, the objective is also included to be able to:

  • Translate short texts, eg. a newspaper article from Swedish into French.

Course Content

The course includes a systematic review of basic elements of French grammar with practice exercises of various kinds. Linguistic analysis is carried out in connection with different types of writing exercises of both a controlled and freer nature. If the course is read with a contrastive focus, there are also translation exercises.

Assessment

Continuous assessment through written assignments and a written final exam.

Forms of Study

The teaching is conducted both in lecture form, and through seminars. Teaching
takes place in French and/or Swedish.

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

To get VG on the course, a minimum of 4 credits VG is required.

Reporting of grades:
Module 1 Basic knowledge of general and French grammar 1 credit
Module 2 Grammar 4 credits
Module 3 Writing proficiency 2.5 credits

Prerequisites

  • General entrance requirements and French step 3 at Swedish upper secondary school, or equivalent knowledge. No knowledge of Swedish is required. No knowledge of English is required.

The course with contrastive focus can be part of the specialisation French in the teacher education programme at Dalarna University.
