Learning Outcomes

On passing this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate fundamental skills in oral discussions, such as turn-taking, communicating clearly and effectively their point of view, and respecting the opinion of other students
  • search for topical information and present it in a concise form, as well as provide ideas from the information for group discussion
  • be aware of the variety of registers (levels of language) within English and how they should be used, that is, to analyse the communication situation and apply the appropriate register
  • demonstrate a practical knowledge of presentation technique in the form of formal and informal presentations
  • show empathy and understanding for cultural diversity in order to prepare themselves to work with business in a culture other than their own
  • write clear, concise and correct business-related texts in English using an expanded business glossary
  • identify and avoid common grammatical mistakes in the English language
  • prepare themselves for a job interview by writing a CV and accompanying documentation and by discussing interview technique.

Course Content

The course is divided into three modules.

Modules

1.
Oral Communication, 3 ECTS-credits

This module involves a variety of oral skills exercises such as discussions with particular regard to business, employment and social situations. Business vocabulary will be acquired via discussions, worksheets and exercises. The students’ business vocabulary will be developed by reading and analysing a case study which is presented orally and in the form of a written report.

2.
Culture, 1.5 ECTS-credits

This module gives students insight into the various aspects which make up the concept of ‘culture’; at the same time students will be required to reflect on how they view their own and other cultures in preparation for employment abroad.

3.
Written Communication, 3 ECTS-credits

This module highlights the basic structure of the English language, including fundamental grammar points. Writing skills will be developed through a variety of exercises such as brief reports, letter writing, etc. Attention will be given to language style and to practical cultural aspects.

Assessment

Attendance at seminars is obligatory. For Modules 1 and 2, grading is based on continuous assessment of active seminar participation and preparation, as well as the written and oral reporting of a case study. For Module 3, assessment is based on active seminar participation and preparation, and written assignments.

Forms of Study

English is used exclusively during seminars, group work, etc in all the course modules to allow for intensive practice. The seminars encourage open discussion of the texts chosen by the course tutor and those chosen by the students.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

  • General entry requirements and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
