Learning Outcomes

The overall goal of the course is for students to gain knowledge and skills in system design, dimensioning and reporting of facilities for heating, ventilation, hot water, sewage and sanitation systems in buildings. The student should become familiar with the historical development of these systems and the standards which govern their design. The student should become familiar with the contents of a building services drawing (Heating, Ventilation, Sanitation).

Upon completion of the course students will be able to:

  • explain what determines the thermal indoor climate
  • explain requirements for healthy indoor environment
  • describe the design of water and sewage systems in buildings
  • describe the function of different types of heating and cooling systems
  • calculate the effect and energy requirements for heating and hot water
  • describe the function of different types of ventilation systems
  • explain the norms governing building services in buildings
  • explain the historical development of building services systems in buildings
  • understand common concepts and terminology in a building services drawing

Course Content

The course covers different factors affecting the indoor climate. Further on, the course focuses on buildings’ heat balance, the building and dimensioning of heating systems and the calculation of power and energy needs. Cooling systems in buildings, the building and dimensioning of ventilation systems, building and dimensioning of water and sewage systems are also addressed. Finally, standards and drawings for presentation of building services systems are covered.
