In the course students study the theoretical foundations of documentary film narrative. They make an ethnographic field study which they use as a starting point for a film exercise. The students make short film portraits of authentic individuals, workplaces or public places. The course includes basic skills in documentary production and documentary film history. Particular emphasis is put on narrative perspectives and how to work with voluminous material. Ethical issues in documentary film production are discussed from both formal and substantive aspects.
