Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • demonstrate a basic understanding of the fundamental conditions for educational policy and for the role of education in the development of African societies
  • explain and discuss issues of educational policy with particular relevance to conditions in Africa
  • analyse the relationships between global processes and social change in African societies.

Course Content

The course deals with educational policy and the role of education in the development of African societies. Focus is on the relationship between education and social change. Indigenous knowledge and learning systems are discussed in relation to formal and structured education systems. The role of international aid for education in the development of African societies will be discussed as will questions related to professional ethics and to the role of official curricula.

Assessment

Students are assessed based on active participation during seminars and written assignments.

Forms of Study

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures and seminars. All teaching is in English.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

Prerequisites

  • 60 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6. No knowledge of Swedish is required
