Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse how HR practices contribute to sustainable organisational performance based on strategic HRM and sustainability perspectives
  • discuss trade-offs and tensions within HRM in relation to financial performance and employee well-being from a sustainability perspective
  • apply basic quantitative analytical methods to HR data and communicate findings as a basis for data-driven HR recommendations
  • critically examine the ethical implications of data-driven and digital tools in HRM, including issues of bias, privacy and accountability
  • reflect on the limitations of quantitative data as well as their own analytical choices when studying people in organisations.

Course Content

The course’s first module, Theoretical Perspectives and Analysis in HRM, addresses strategic HRM and the relationship between HR practices, organisational performance and sustainability. The module explores trade-offs between organisational goals, financial performance and employee well-being. It also addresses digitalisation, HR data and quantitative analysis in HRM, as well as ethical and societal aspects of data-driven decision-making.

The second module, HR Data and Communication, addresses basic quantitative analytical methods, data types and data quality in HR. The focus is on analysing and communicating HR data as a basis for organisational decision-making.

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U–VG.

To be awarded the grade Pass with Distinction (VG) for the course, students must achieve a Pass with Distinction (VG) in the second module.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Theoretical Perspectives and Analysis in HRM - 5 Credits | U–G
  • HR Data and Communication - 2.5 Credits | U–VG

Entry Requirements

  • Degree of Bachelor in a main field of study in the Social Sciences 180 credits, including 22.5 credits in Business Administration, Human Resource Management or Work Science, and 7.5 credits in Social Science Research Methods, as well as English 6/English Level 2

Other Information

The language of instruction is English.

In the case of a re-examination, the form of assessment may be changed at the discretion of the examiner.

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
