Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyse and explain the physical processes that determine the output of different types of solar cells, andrelate this to the physical models that can be used to calculate this output,
  • explain the mechanism that generate current and voltage in illuminated semi-conductors,
  • describe how PV cells are used to create PV modules and discuss the manufacturing processes of these,
  • explain the characterisation methods for PV cells and PV cell modules and explain typical failure mechanisms.

Course Content

The course covers various semi-conductor materials and their suitability for solar cell manufacturing, absorption of solar radiation in semi-conductors, and the physics of  solar cells. Different types of solar cells are studied as is the way they are characterised and assembled in photovoltaic modules. The course covers the identification and minimisation of losses and degradation as well as the interpretation and use of the module datasheets of photovoltaic modules.

Assessment

  • Written exam
  • Assignments

Grades

The grading scale used for the final course grade is U, 3, 4, 5.

The final grade of the course is set after an overall assessment by the examiner.

Grades are reported as follows:

  • Assignments - 2 Credits | U–G
  • Written Examination - 3 Credits | U, 3, 4, 5

Entry Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Bachelor of Science degree with the main field of study in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, energy engineering or engineering physics and English 6

Other Information

This course cannot be counted towards the same degree along with courses that have equivalent content.

If the student has received a decision/recommendation granting study support from Dalarna University because of a disability, then the examiner has the right to offer an alternative examination arrangement. The examiner takes into account the objectives in the course syllabus when deciding whether the examination can be adapted in accordance with the decision/recommendation.
