Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to

  • select appropriate components  for PV grid-connected systems
  • describe the main types and concepts of PV grid-connected systems
  • independently size grid-connected PV systems based on basic design procedures and calculations
  • show a good command of computer programmes for sizing, modelling, simulating and optimising commonly used types of grid-connected PV systems
  • critically evaluate the sizing and performance of both components and complete PV systems through an analysis of losses
  • describe environmental and socio economic aspects of PV systems.

Course Content

The course deals with electricity production using photovoltaic modules in grid connected systems. The course starts with a review of the most common components in PV systems and their working principles.   The course comprises the sizing, monitoring and performance evaluation of components and complete systems. The course includes simulation and design studies with simulation tools. The system studies are finalized with system analysis and system evaluation. The course covers also aspects of system planning.
