Course EN1086

English Language Structure

7.5 Credits
First Cycle

Starts week 3, 2023

The course consists of three modules:
Module 1. Grammar (5 ECTS-credits)
This part familiarizes students with the fundamentals of English grammar. This theoretical knowledge is then used to identify, explain and correct different kinds of grammatical problems in authentic texts.
Module 2a. Translation (1.5 ECTS-credits)
The Translation module is a contrastive hands-on study of Swedish and English language usage.
Module 2b. Stylistics (1.5 ECTS-credits)
Students whose native language is not Swedish choose an alternative which deals with idiomatic English as well as different language registers. In several assignments, students have an opportunity to apply in their own writing the skills and knowledge acquired in the first two modules.
Module 3. Phonetics (1 ECTS-credits)
In this module, students study general principles of speech production as well as different features of the sounds of English. English pronunciation is also practised through study and use of phonetic transcription.
