Residence permit extensions

If your current residence permit for studies will expire and you want to continue studying or stay in Sweden after your studies, you must apply for a new permit.

When to apply

You can apply to extend your residence permit up to four months before your current permit expires, and no later than the date your current permit expires.

Decisions on extension applications often take many months.

You can apply even if some documents, such as final grades or a degree certificate, are not yet available. Additional documents can normally be submitted later to the Swedish Migration Agency.

Choose the situation that applies to you

Most requirements are the same for all extension applications, but the study-related documents you need to submit depend on your situation.

1. Continue your studies

You need to extend your residence permit and expect to complete your programme without additional study time.

When you apply, you will need documents showing:

  • that you are admitted to full-time studies for the upcoming semester(s)
  • A transcript from Ladok showing your completed courses and credits

You may be asked to submit proof of registration later, for example if the semester starts while your application is being processed.

2. Complete unfinished courses

You need to extend your residence permit because you will not complete your programme within the originally planned study duration.

When you apply, you will need a certificate from your programme manager explaining:

  • which parts of your studies remain
  • why your studies are not yet completed
  • when you are expected to complete your studies

You should also submit a transcript from Ladok showing your completed courses and credits.

The Swedish Migration Agency provides a template showing what information should be included in the certificate for unfinished studies:

3. Look for work after completing your programme

You have completed your bachelor's or master's programme at Dalarna University and want to stay in Sweden to look for employment or explore starting your own business.

When you apply, you will need to submit your final transcript from Ladok, showing that you completed your programme at Dalarna University.

If your final grades are not available before your current residence permit expires, you should still apply before your permit expires and submit a transcript showing the courses and credits you have completed so far.

You can submit your final transcript and other required documents as soon as they become available, even if this is after your current permit expires.

If you need additional time to complete your studies, see "2. Complete unfinished courses"

Requirements for all extension applications

Valid passport

Your passport must be valid for the period you are applying for.

If your passport expires before the end date of your requested permit period, the Swedish Migration Agency may limit your permit to match your passport validity.

Financial support

You must show that you can support yourself financially for the period you are applying for.

For 2026, the Swedish Migration Agency requires:

  • 10,656 SEK per month for you
  • 4,440 SEK per month for a spouse or partner
  • 2,664 SEK per month for each child

The money must be available in an account in your name. Financial support from private individuals, such as sponsors, is not accepted.

Documents showing your financial support must not be older than four months from the start date of the permit you are applying for.

Health insurance

Most students applying to extend a residence permit do not need to submit proof of health insurance because their total permit periods exceeds one year.

Additional documents

The Swedish Migration Agency may contact you and request additional documents depending on your situation.

While waiting for a decision

If you applied before your current residence permit expires, you can remain in Sweden under the same conditions as your previous permit while waiting for a decision.

If you leave Sweden after your current permit expires, you may not be able to re-enter Sweden until your new permit is approved.
