Types of invigilated exams
Campus exams (salstentamen)
An examination taken on campus is known as a salstentamen in Swedish. Students take the exam in a specific room at a set time. The exam can be either pen/paper or digital, that is, on a computer.
Digital campus exams (digital salstentamen)
Inspera is used for digital exams. Inspera allows the teacher to use Safe Exam Browser, which locks the exam so that students can only open certain programs/use certain resources during the exam. With a digital campus exam, students have access to a university computer. There are 50 computer stations at Campus Borlänge and 100 computer stations at Campus Falun. When student numbers require it, the computer stations at both campuses can be used for the same examination.
Online exams (onlinetentamen)
An online exam is an exam that is written remotely in Inspera or Canvas and invigilated on Zoom instead of in a room.
Online exams in Inspera are anonymised. Safe Exam Browser cannot be used with online examinations because it locks Zoom, which is the tool used to invigilate.
Online exams in Canvas are not anonymised and are written using the student's name. This is because anonymisation is not fully supported in the examination process. Oral examinations can also be held online: for example, language tests.
Examinations: ordering, planning and preparing
Examinations are scheduled in students' timetables. Students need to plan their studies accordingly, especially when they need to make preparations if they want to take an examination at another location.
On the webpage "Tentamensprocess - från planering till publicering", you can find information about how to plan, prepare and administer an exam from when you order it to when you publish it. The webpage also includes information about scheduling, booking, activation, implementation, assessment and grade transfer for different examination forms.

Inspera - campus and online exams
- Inspera is an examination resource/tool for digital campus exams and online exams.
- The system can be used either with or without Safe Exam Browser (SEB).
- Students take the exam on either
- specific computers on campus or
- on their own computers if they are taking the exam at another place
- In the case of online exams, Inspera cannot be used with Safe Exam Browser. This is because Safe Exam Browser is not compatible with Zoom, as it shuts down Zoom, which is used to invigilate exams.
Using Inspera for the first time
When you plan to use Inspera for the first time for an e-examination, there are four steps you need to follow.
Order your exam by using:
- the schemaunderlag, or
- the form Beställ tentamenstillfälle
In your order, state that the exam will be completed in Inspera.
To be able to work in Inspera, you need the correct role in the system.
For this, you need to complete two short courses:
- Author education (författarutbildning) - take this before you create your first exam in Inspera
- Grading education (bedömarutbildning) - take this after the students have written the exam so that you have their exam to work with when grading
We recommend that you bring your exam-related questions with you to the "Författarutbildningen" so that you can begin developing your examination directly.
You can access Inspera here:
- on the homepage of the Medarbetarwebben (staff webpage) under "Fler verktyg"
- by logging in directly on du.inspera.com/admin
Use your university account to log in.
If you want to familiarise yourself with the system and see what questions arise, you can test Demotentamen 2.0.
No later than five working days before the examination date, you must book a meeting with the examination coordinator (tentamensfunktionen).
Do this by email: tentamen@du.se
Before the meeting, your exam must be completely finalised.
The meeting is necessary because the rules and procedures differ between paper-based exams and digital exams in Inspera.
Information meeting for students
If students are taking a digital exam in Inspera for the first time or if the examination format changes (for example, from paper-based to digital, or from campus to online), you can book a short information session.
The examination services team can then visit the course or programme and give a presentation (approx. 15 minutes).
During the presentation, students will receive information about:
- the rules for digital campus exams in Inspera
- how Inspera works
- the student's responsibilities: for example, testing their equipment when taking an exam at another location
We recommend that you schedule this session about four to five weeks before the date of the exam.
Would you like to book an information session? Please email: tentamen@du.se
Ahead of every examination in Inspera
- Create an examination in Inspera.
- Information is submitted using the obligatory cover sheet (försättsbladet) in Inspera: you will gain access to this during the course.
Exams at another location
A student can take an exam at another location as long as it is a written examination (saltentamen) or a campus e-examination (digital salstentamen).
If it is not possible to take an exam at another location, you, as teacher, need to actively remove this option when you order your exam.
Students taking a digital written examination at another location are responsible for ensuring that their computer works according to the instructions on the student web: Exams at another location.
Support is offered ahead of an exam. On the day of the exam, students are expected to manage any technical issues on their own.
Students with study (educational) support
Students who have study support need to report this at the same time as they register for the exam. To ensure the same level of anonymity as for other students, teachers will not be provided with the student's notification of support.
If the resources/study aids that the student is granted are deemed unreasonable in relation to the examination format in question, the examiner will be contacted before the exam.
When an examination has been ordered, students receive notification on the student web stating that they can register for the exam. The exam remains visible for the duration of the registration period.
When the student has registered:
- confirmation is sent to the student's university email
- the registration appears under ”Mina tentamensanmälningar” in Tentamenstjänster (examination services)
There, students can see:
- the campus or other location
- which campus the exam will be held at
- whicih assessment tool will be used
Students who have approved study (educational) support register this via Examination Services (tentamenstjänster). Before the registration can be completed, the student must certify that they have read the examination regulations. Examination Services also provides several information pages about exams.
