General information

This is an occasion where we recognise academic achievements and outstanding work.

At Dalarna University, new doctors and honorary doctors are conferred, new professors are inaugurated, and adjunct professors, visiting professors, associate professors, doctors with doctoral degrees from another university, distinguished and recognised teachers, and senior lecturers promoted on artistic grounds are honoured.

Academic Ceremony - Dalarna University

It is a tradition with roots in the Middle Ages that recognises academic achievements and research. Dalarna University held its first Academic Ceremony in 1995. Since 2004, we have held the ceremony every second year as a way to demonstrate the quality of our research and education.

Pre-registered guests are welcome to attend the ceremony and banquet.

University employees are welcome to attend the ceremony free of charge. You and a guest can also choose to attend the subsequent banquet for a subsidised cover fee, subject to availability.

The invitation is sent out by email to employees and externally invited guests in December 2026.

Venue: Galaxen, Borlänge
Time: 19 March 2027, at XX (arrival no later than XX. Note, if you have registered to be part of the procession, the line-up is at XX in the designated place in Galaxen.

Pre-registration is required for both the ceremony and the banquet.

Participants at the ceremony

Yes, a free cloakroom is available at Galaxen, Borlänge. Paid parking is available adjacent to the venues.

Dress code and traditions

Dress codes

There are two types of dress codes, depending on your participation in Academic Ceremony. Please see below for what applies to you.

Formal attire ("Högtidsdräkt"): Tailcoat (with a white waistcoat and white bow tie, black socks and black shoes), folk costume (folkdräkt), uniform, full-length evening dress or ball gown. 

Dark suit ("Mörk kostym"): A full dark suit (black, dark blue or dark grey). Dress, trouser suit, skirt or trousers with a matching top. The length of the skirt or trousers should be below the knee/calf length. Folk costume (folkdräkt) is also fine. Formal footwear. 

Inaugurated as a professor: formal attire

Accompanying guests can have formal attire, but the dress code dark suit is also fine.

You will be conferred as a doctor: formal attire 

Accompanying guests can have formal attire, but the dress code dark suit is also fine. 

Recognised and honoured attendees: dark suit

This includes:

  • associate professors (docents)
  • doctoral graduates at other universities
  • visiting professors/adjunct professors
  • distinguished and recognised university teachers
  • senior lecturer promoted on artistic merits and award recipients)
  • accompanying guests

Role during the ceremony (on stage): formal attire 

This includes positions such as Vice-Chancellor, promoter, and other key roles. Accompanying guests can have formal attire, dress code a dark suit is also fine. 

Other guests: dark suit 

This includes: external invited guests, employees and former employees at Dalarna University and accompanying guests.

At the ceremony, the doctors are conferred with a laurel wreath. If you are a doctor and have ordered a doctoral hat, please store it under your chair and wear it during the exit procession. The hat is not to be worn during the banquet.
