Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain, both orally and in writing, the history of Islam in Africa
  • discuss and problematise the relationships between different Islamic orientations, and their relationship to surrounding societies in Africa
  • discuss and apply relevant theories on the role of Islam in history and society in Africa
  • independently and critically interpret and analyse processes, mechanisms and strategies within different orientations of Islam in Africa.

Course Content

The course includes the study of the historical development of Islam in Africa and the contemporary relationships between different forms of Islam in Africa. Also studied are the mutual influences between various forms of Islam and African societies. An important issue dealt with in the course is the relationship between global and local perspectives in the study of Islam in Africa.

Assessment

The course is examined by way of oral and written presentations relating to seminars; a home examination on the history of Islam in Africa; and an independently written and critical analysis of literature that the student chooses in consultation with the teacher.

Forms of Study

Lectures and obligatory seminars. The langauge of instruction is English.

Grades

The Swedish grades A–F.

Prerequisites

  • A Bachelor Degree of 180 credits in the field of Humanities, Social Sciences or Education and English 6 and the course African Studies: Religion and Politics in African Societies, 9 credits at Second cycle. No knowledge of Swedish is required.

Other Information

Depending on the number of students, the course may be given in the form of a reading (self-study) course.
If the course is offered in the form of a reading course, then the oral element of the assessment will be omitted.
