RECAST – Interdisciplinary Interactions for Sustainable Development

RECAST (Research Collegium for the Advancement of Sustainability) is a forum for researchers and doctoral students from all disciplines to discuss research relating to sustainability, share knowledge, promote interdisciplinary collaboration, widen networks, and develop collaborative partnerships. RECAST is for anyone interested in the role of research in the transition to a sustainable society. Currently, RECAST activities are organised and run by the Council for Sustainable Development.

Establishing and Developing the Network

Can you tell us briefly how the network was established?
– The initiative first came from a group of researchers, when Ioanna Farsari (IKS), Mats Tegmark (ILU), David Gray (ISLL),  Marie Elf (IHOV), and I applied for internal funding that had been allocated for interdisciplinary research. The idea was to create an interdisciplinary research environment to promote the achievement of global goals in Agenda 2030, says Farhana.

The underlying thought was to discuss research and share experiences of research approaches and methods. Although the primary focus has always been on research, there is a natural connection to education and collaboration.

Since its outset, RECAST has held two to four meetings per year, where between 20 and 38 colleagues have been active. Currently, the initiative is part of the work being done by the Council for Sustainable Development and is a vital contribution to the university’s goals for sustainable development.

– It has been incredible to meet so many competent and dedicated colleagues. An important insight that the research network has achieved is an understanding of the many ways we can approach the issue of sustainable development.

What has presented the most challenges?
– A major challenge has been to effectively distribute the information throughout the organisation. For building bridges and finding new collaborative opportunities, it is so worthwhile to meet in person and develop an internal network.

New Coordinator Autumn 2024

Farhana has now stepped down from her role as RECAST coordinator. Taking over from her is Ioanna Farsari, Associate Professor (Docent) of Tourism Studies.

– It has been so rewarding to build up RECAST, and I am truly grateful for the support from university management, which is crucial! I look forward to following the development of the network going forward, adds Farhana.
