New learning management system in 2023

In 2024, the contract with Blackboard (the University’s current learning management system, which was introduced in 2017) is set to expire, with no possibility of extension. As such, work to introduce a new learning management system will begin in 2023, and the current one of choice is Canvas.

Via SUNET, the Swedish University Computer Network, the University is in a position to subscribe to the learning platform Canvas, which is currently used by close to 30 other higher education institutions in Sweden. The fact it can be procured via SUNET facilitates the procurement process. The decision by the Vice-Chancellor to choose Canvas stems from discussions with the Advisory Council to the Vice-Chancellor.

The implementation of Canvas will begin in the spring of 2023, with work expected to take at least 1.5 years to make it easier for support functions and the Schools at the University to adapt to and work with the new system. As was the case when Blackboard was introduced back in 2017, courses will be offered in how to use Canvas well ahead of time to allow users to familiarise themselves with its functions.

Working to establish a plan for its introduction are project managers and a working group made up of staff members from both the Office of Education and Research Services and the Office of IT and Digital Infrastructure.

Additional information will be made available on the staff website (medarbetarwebben) when the time schedule for implementation has been established.
