Learning outcomes

Rule:
The course’s learning outcomes must describe, in broad terms, what students are expected to be able to do upon successful completion of the course. They should be clearly formulated and reflect the level of the course. They must be appropriate in relation to course content, scope, and entry requirements. The outcomes should also be clearly distinct from one another.

Tips:
The introductory phrase “On completion of the course, students will be able to:” is generated automatically in KPW and therefore does not need to be added manually.

If the outcomes are presented in a bulleted list, each one should begin with a lowercase letter and should not be followed by a full stop or comma. Only the final outcome in the list should end with a full stop.

Questions to consider:

  • Are the intended learning outcomes appropriate for the course level?
  • Does the course have a reasonable number of intended learning outcomes in relation to the number of credits?
  • Are the outcomes expressed in terms of what students are expected to achieve?
  • Are the outcomes formulated in a way that allows for assessment?
  • Are the outcomes clearly distinguishable from one another?
