Final Seminar - Sustainable Urban Development

On 30 September, Johanna Mattsson, jomt@du.se, held the final seminar for her doctoral thesis, titled "Cross-Sectoral Collaboration in Urban Sustainable Housing Development: Exploring Thriving Public-Private Partnerships."

As part of the "Future Proof Cities" project and her work with Stora Tunabyggen, Fastighets AB Hushagen, and Fiskarhedenvillan, Johanna has researched how private and public actors in the housing and real estate sectors can collaborate to contribute to sustainable urban development. Her research focuses on sustainability, collaboration, participation, and business models.

Collaboration is currently viewed as a key strategy to promote sustainable societal development, particularly in complex fields such as urban development. However, putting collaboration into practice often proves more challenging than it appears in theory. Against this backdrop, this research examines how collaboration can contribute to sustainable development within urban development projects.

Among other findings, Johanna’s research demonstrates that collaborations for urban sustainability need to involve a diverse range of actors to address both ecological and social sustainability issues.

Johanna’s research was reviewed by Peter Palm (Malmö University) and Magnus Hoppe (Mälardalen University).

Rana Mostaghel (Stockholm University) served as the principal supervisor, with Terence Fell (Mälardalen University), Lars Lindbergh (Umeå University), and Carin Nordström (Södertörn University) acting as co-supervisors.
