The Social Contexts of Energy Systems

The overall aim of this course is for students to increase their awareness of the importance that varying social actors and contexts have on the function of energy systems. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify a number of factors that are essential for the introduction of new energy technology and the ability of the technology to gain a stable foothold in specific cultural contexts
  • explain how a change in energy carrier or energy system may vary as a result of the situation and cultural context, explain how this change can affect different parties in various ways, and explain the difference between inside and outside perspectives
  • use social-scientific concepts and approaches to analyse the implementation and long-term sustainable use of energy systems
  • show  insight into social and ethical aspects of research and development.
