Learning Outcomes

The course aims for students to acquire a deeper insight into German language and cultural history and get an overview of the German language development from the 500‘s to modern times as well as practice their academic writing skills. After completing the course the students shall, in addition to increased overall language skills, be able to:

  • demonstrate a deeper insight into the German language structure and history and be able to draw their own conclusions and theorize about German language development
  • demonstrate an independent and critical approach to various methods in older and modern linguistic research and be able to discover contrastively important similarities and differences between Swedish and German
  • apply basic skills in academic writing when writing a paper
  • critically evaluate their own learning and identify any additional competence needs in the subject.

Course Content

The course comprises of two parts, of which the first, language and cultural history, focuses on the main features of language development from Germanic to modern German with its dialectal variations. Representative texts from each time period is studied both from a phonetic, syntactic and a cultural point of view. In the second part of the course students comment on a, in this course previously produced, approved student paper and thereby builds a critically reflective approach. The students writes a scientific paper of about 7-10 pages, which can be related to language and cultural history or to any of the disciplines of linguistics or literature. Within the framework of the paper the students practice basic skills in academic writing such as formalities, source criticism and information retrieval.

Assessment

The student is examined by active participation in seminars as well as assignments and an essay.

The course is taught through lectures and examining seminars.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

Module 1: Language history and cultural history - 3 cr
Module 2: Academic writing with essay - 4.5 cr

  • German Grammar - basic course 7,5 credits and German Written Proficiency I, 7,5 credits
