Learning Outcomes

From this course the students will become acquainted with the Swedish education system for children and adolescents and with Swedish teacher education.

On completing the course, the students will

  • have a basic knowledge of how education for children and adolescents is organized in Sweden
  • gain an insight into the importance of democracy for work in school
  • have some knowledge of teacher education in Sweden
  • be able to compare education in Sweden with education in their own countries

Course Content

The course primarily takes up Swedish education for children and adolescents at present, but some historical overview is also given. Specific themes that are treated are the importance of democracy for Swedish schools, work with children with special needs and the use of information technology in education. In the course, Swedish teacher education is treated historically with teacher education at Högskolan Dalarna as an example. Education at different levels in the student’s own country is compared to education in Sweden.

Assessment

Examination is based on continuous assessment and a final essay.

Forms of Study

The main forms of study are literature studies, lectures, seminars, and ten days of field studies at a local school.

The Swedish grades U–VG.

The course is only available to visiting foreign students. All teaching is in English.
