Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • express opinions in Japanese about the contents of manga they have read
  • identify and discuss different language styles and expressions used in Japanese manga
  • describe the narrative structure in sections of Japanese manga.

Course Content

The original texts of different genres of manga are studied and used as material for class discussions. A number of representative works are read and analyzed, giving an overview of different styles. Some emphasis is put on manga with a relatively large amount of text and in which the verbal expression is rich. The oral language qualities of manga are also studied in order to deepen the student’s knowledge of the different oral styles of spoken Japanese.

Assessment

Continuous assessment will be used during the course. Grades will be based on regular written assignments, active performance in class and a final essay.

Forms of Study

Japanese is used as the language of tuition, with English exceptionally used as support language. Teaching takes the form of seminars and self-study activities.

Prerequisites

  • A minimum of 60 credits in Japanese at undergraduate level
