Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • identify and describe key issues and key texts within a limited research area related to Portuguese literature or linguistics
  • critically analyse and problematise current research issues, concepts, theories and methods in representative works within the research area, as well as place them in a broader historical and international context
  • use theory and concepts that are relevant to the field in their own literary or linguistic analyses and interpretations
  • communicate and argue for their interpretations of the scientific material both orally and in writing
  • search for, collect and critically evaluate relevant information within a limited area of research, and refer to them in an academically correct manner.

Course Content

The course is a reading course that includes specialization within a particular linguistic or literary field of research directly related to the student‘s chosen topic for in-depth studies. The literature list is defined together with the tutor, and focus is placed on theoretical key texts and important methodological questions related to the specific research area. In this course, students practise their ability to make summary descriptions and critical summaries of theoretical arguments and texts, and annotated bibliographies. Only areas where guidance can be given by an advisor with research expertise will be considered.
