Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • critically reflect on the knowledge in the field of Business Administration in general, and specifically in relation to different management approaches, including an insight into the state of the art within one of the areas of Business Administration (1)
  • give a deeper account of methodological approaches relevant in the field of Business Administration (2)

Skills and abilities
After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • integrate knowledge and to analyse, critically assess and deal with complex phenomena, issues and situations within the field of study (3)
  • identify and formulate research problems and to plan and carry out advanced studies within a specified timeframe (4)
  • argue in writing for their own research findings and conclusions as well as for the chosen research design and the knowledge and arguments behind the research findings and conclusions (5)
  • orally present, discuss and defend their own research study in academic discussions with others (6)
  • analyse and critically assess and discuss the scholarly works of others (7)



Values and attitudes
After completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • make judgments and take into account relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects, and demonstrate an awareness of ethical issues in scientific research (8)

Course Content

Students plan, prepare and write a scientific thesis independently (10 weeks). Tutorials will be given during the course. The drafts and final papers are presented and defended in seminars where students discuss and critically assess each other works.

Assessment

Assignment 1 (examines outcome 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8): Written thesis, 15 credits
Assignment 2 (examines outcome 6, 7): Active participation in 3 obligatory seminars with oral presentations of written papers (thesis in different stages of the development) and defence of own work and being the opponent of another student’s work 0 credits

Grades

The Swedish grades U–VG.

The following ratings can be obtained:

Assignment 1: U, G, VG
Assignment 2: U, G

To pass the course students must obtain the grade G on all assignments. To pass the course with distinction (VG), VG is in addition required on assignment 1.

Prerequisites

  • Bachelor degree in Business Administration or equivalent. 30 credits on advanced level in Business Administration and Research Design and Theory of Science and Methods, 15 credits Advanced Level

Other Information

Number of exam attempts is limited to five. The thesis must be submitted at the timespecified by the examiner. Assessment can only be done at specified examinations. If there are two authors on one thesis, each student should be prepared to give an account of their own contributions. If the paper has failed at two examinations, the thesis topic must be changed. The ones admitted to and registered for the course are entitled to receive instruction and tutorials during the time specified for the course to which they were accepted. Additions must be submitted no later than the time specified by the examiner.
