Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should be able to:
- Discuss different perspectives on how and why the concept of freedom has played and is playing an important role in modern Arabic literature
- analyse in which way freedom as a concept has been expressed in different genres
- compare how freedom has been used stylistically in different genres and by different writers
- select a number of authors who have the quest for freedom as a central theme in their works and argue well for the choice made.
Course Content
A quest for freedom from political, ideological as well as religious and stilistic boundaries has been evident in modern Arabic literature throughout the 20 th century. During the course the influence of this quest on literature will be discussed and example texts analysed, and writers well-known for their quest for freedom will be discussed. The students are also encouraged to choose their own authors whom they believe write about freedom, present them and argue for their choice using the models discussed during the course.
Assessment
The course will be continuously assessed throughout hand-in assignments and participation in seminar discussions, as well as through two pieces of written work.
Forms of Study
The course will be taught through lectures and seminars where students are expected to participate actively. The course will be taught in Arabic.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
