Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course the student should be able to:
- discuss the content of literary text, news, recorded material and songs in a nuanced way
- translate different types of texts, such as articles, poems and prose, from and to Arabic, and demonstrate the difficulties and differences between the languages.
- identify grammatical problems in a text and write grammatical analyses
- adjust one‘s language and the content of a written text to the supposed reader
- make longer presentations on different topics in Arabic
- account for the foundations of balagha
- make literary analyses with the focus on the different aspects of the narration (time, place, characters, etc.)
- account in brief for the development of Arabic literature
- individually complete a shorter written project on one of the more important eras of Arabic literature.
Course Content
The course consists of three modules: Grammar and texts, Oral proficiency and The development of Arabic literature. In the first two modules, which are studied together, the students read and listens to different types of materials in standard Arabic, such as songs, reports, poems, news and prose. The students go through the foundations of balagha and use their knowledge in literary analyses of texts together with other analytical tools. The students use the grammar they have learnt and make individual grammatical analyses of texts. They also work with translation with focus on comparing arabic and swedish/english. In the module The development of Arabic literature the students reads articles and listens to lectures and then complete an independent work based on a chosen issue and a short project plan.
Assessment
Grades for the Grammar and texts module are based on continuous assessment of assignments and class participation, a written project and a written and an oral exam.
Grades for the Oral proficiency module are based on continuous assessment of active class participation throughout the course and on a final oral exam.
The module The development of Arabic literature is examined through a final written assignment.
Great weight is placed on deadlines, and assignments handed in late are only awarded G at most.
Forms of Study
Arabic is used as the teaching language, with Swedish or English as support languages. The material in the module The development of Arabic literature is in English and Arabic. The material is studied individually and is presented in a written PM. Seminars are the main activity for the course and students are expected to participate actively. A number of tasks require the ability to cooperate with other participants.
Grades
The Swedish grades U–VG.
To receive the grade of VG for the whole course, VG is required on module 1 and 2.
