Description
Breastfeeding entails significant health benefits for mothers and infants. Breastfeeding concerns 110 000 mothers each year in Sweden. However, breastfeeding prevalence are decreasing. Many mothers (60%) cease breastfeeding earlier than they had planned, the reasons for this are insufficiently known. The purpose is to identify factors that are associated with unintended cessation of breastfeeding.
This multidisciplinary project have a prospective longitudinal mixed methods design and will follow mothers from pregnancy until 12 months after birth or until breastfeeding cessation. A total of 1000 mothers will be included in the main project in 2023-2024.
Data about mothers and infants characteristics, health, and breastfeeding will be collected via a mobile application. Data regarding pregnancy and birth will be collected via medical records and 25 mothers will be interviewed about their breastfeeding experiences. Samples of breast milk, blood, hair, and saliva will be collected from a subgroup of 70 women, which will be examined for factors that may indicate lactation problems,
stress and inflammation.
Adequate knowledge and support are extremely important for breastfeeding mothers. The goal with this project is to provide knowledge that will contribute to the development of a more individualized breastfeeding care and support for mothers who want to breastfeed, this could increase breastfeeding and thereby improve the health of mothers and children and reduce healthcare costs.
