Description
Mothers of preterm infants (born < 37 gestational weeks) and/or with a lower socioeconomic status (SES) breastfeed to a lower extent than mothers of term infants and/or more advantageous mothers. Hence, the aim with this multi-centre randomized controlled trial is to assess the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of proactive or reactive telephone support to mothers of preterm infants, after discharge from neonatal units. Intervention comprises proactive (support team initiated) daily telephone support for up to 14 days after hospital discharge (in addition to reactive telephone support). Controls receive reactive telephone support where mothers can phone the feeding support team up to day 14.
Feeding support teams (3 units with 5-6 staff/ unit) will be trained in breastfeeding support and in providing person-centred care.
This RCT on proactive telephone support to mothers of preterm infants at neonatal units will hopefully increase the rate of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding. In addition, by this support, the transition to a home environment will be emotionally facilitated and breastfeeding problems alleviated, which in turn will increase satisfaction with breastfeeding, and attachment. With a health economic evaluation we can also assess if this intervention is cost-effective.
